Americans used to be one of the brightest nations on this planet... and now we're slowly descending to be one of the lesser nations in knowledge. This isn't to say every American is an idiot... just on average. I consider ourselves here to be the exception, as we aren't complete morons like those around the area.
So I would like opinions as to where you think American education went wrong.

Things probably started going downhill when people began to focus more on money and greed than what needs to be done. We should have been working towards education with our country's resources and not lying are arguing about how to use money, etc.

I think what happened was that America thought it had to be the best. So it put all the pressure on teachers and students and it ended up backfiring. We have to know all this core content that doesn't even come up again in life unless you are going to teach it when you grow up. I've asked my math teacher where something she was teaching us would come up in life and she says "Honestly, unless you're a math teacher or a mathematician, you'll never need to know this" and that is just time-wasting. Also, the bullshit that is "No Child Left Behind" they are teaching kids with a 3rd grade reading level, core content about Julius Caesar and expecting them to interpret it just as well as someone with a higher IQ than them! It's ridiculous, and again, time wasting. They only focus on test scores which don't really tell you anything about the child's knowledge at all, maybe they just guessed correctly, maybe they aren't good with timed tests but if they had more time they could figure out the answer. It's all just a big FAIL.

Yeah...
Multiple choice is fail for that kind of thing. When you think about it... test scores are random.

Yeah.
I think it started when the no child left behind grant was passed. Because there are some kids that just dont want to learn and theyre not going 2. The kids like that you just cant help. And it is putting stress on the teachers to make those kids learn.

i think education should become a little more "interesting" because if things are interesting they are easy to remember (for ex. i cant remember about my chores around the house after about an hour but i can remember just about everything i did on WoW from teh entire day and the day b4)

And it is putting stress on the teachers to make those kids learn. I'm not sure if you understand the No Child Left Behind Act... it's not that the students are lazy... some just aren't capable of it. How anyone expects someone with a lower IQ to read as well as someone with a much higher IQ is beyond me. And the NCLBA is for mentally handicapped students, not for regular-ed. I know some regular-ed kids are lazy and don't want to learn, but the problem is not kids who don't want to learn. The problem is the amount of time we're giving that kid to learn something, and all the pressure we put on the teachers and students to achieve something that is impractical.

Thats pretty much the same thing I said. Its putting alot of pressure on the teachers. And bobert I agree it should be more interesting. I didnt learn anything this year except in Webpage and Spanish. The other teachers mainly let us just watch movies. (Witch was fine w/ me.)
